Finding Unexpected Lessons in Unplanned Detours

Today taught me a valuable reminder: sometimes, when things don't go according to plan, the universe is actually redirecting us to places where we are meant to learn something new.

My afternoon started with a bit of a hiccup. I wanted to go somewhere, but it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I moved to a second place, and still, it wasn't quite right. Finally, I ended up at a third spot—and that’s where the unexpected magic happened.

At first, it just seemed like a normal interaction between a buyer and a seller. But after I dared to open up a conversation, I ended up hearing a story that gave me a completely new perspective. The person guarding the store shared their life experience of working as a babysitter for several years across four different families. Through their story, I gained a broad insight into what working as a babysitter through an agency looks like. The greatest takeaway from that chat was simple yet profound: no matter what happens, life is all about turning experiences into lessons and reasons to be grateful. Everything we go through is something to be thankful for.

Later on, I crossed paths with some senior high school students while trying to get some printing done. We ended up chatting about the future. One of them shared that their older sibling is currently majoring in English Literature at a university in Malang through the independent admission track (jalur mandiri). We had a nice chat where I shared some broad overviews and encouragement about what they could pursue in the future, reminding them to keep a positive outlook and build good connections. I even shared a friendly tip with them about keeping an eye on the store properly—since the shop was left unattended across the street, making it tricky for customers.

Later, something special happened that added a warm feeling to my day. I got a message from a friend saying they shared one of my stories or thoughts with their other friend. Knowing that something I said resonated enough for them to pass it along to someone else—not to show off, but just realizing that we can actually spark a little bit of inspiration for others—feels genuinely heartwarming.

Looking back at the end of the day, what started out as a frustrating series of wrong turns turned into such a sweet, eye-opening afternoon. Honestly, today was really nice and well-spent!
